Basil Rathbone y otras criaturas caninas

Basil Rathbone fue un gran amante de los perros. El primero que tuo se llamó Moritz. Él y su mujer Ouida conocierton a este pastor alemán de negro pelaje en una semana antes de la navidad de 1924, cuando tenía 3 años, en el camerino de un amigo. Al saber que iban a sacrificarle por haber matado a una oveja, pagaron por él a su amigo. Fueron ocho años de feliz convivencia. Rathbone le dedicaría unos versos la misma noche que murió en 1933:
Come winter time and summer time,
Come sweet and cleansing rain,
Come spring time and the autumn,
Both sun and moon shall wane,
Come seed time and flowering,
And harvesting the grain,
The Earth will cease and time grow old,
But we shall meet again.

'Twas not for naught we walked the fields,
The sidewalks and the lanes,
Sharing our hopes, our fears, our doubts,
Beliefs, our joys and pains.
And though I, with human weakness,
Have not always understood,
You with you dog devotion
Blindly believed me good.

Now you will sleep a little while
And dream in peace, please God,
Then one day I shall follow you
And sleep too beneath the sod,
To rise with you and walk again
With a vague sense of remembering
That we had loved in other lives,
Before this new ascending.
Cuando Rathbone y su esposa se trasladaron a California, a mediados de los 30, adquirieron siete perros:
Judy -- white bull terrier
Toni -- black poodle (macho)
Bunty Moore -- una hembra West Highland terrier (la favorita de Ouida)
Cullum Moore -- un macho West Highland terrier
Happy -- a springer spaniel
Leo -- a red cocker (el favorito de Jack Miltern, amigo íntimo que fue atropellado por un coche cuando paseaba a los perros)
Moritza -- black German Shepherd (sucesor de Moritz, y también favorito de Rathbone). En los 50 viviría con ellos la cocker Ginger.
